Food and Love Are a Magical Combination for Healing

Once a month at 2840 N. Milwaukee Avenue, home of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSA), a group of 12 breast cancer survivors come together to support each other.  The LSNA's mission statement reads as follows: "Founded in 1962, LSNA is a nonprofit, multi-issue, grassroots community organization serving the multi-ethnic communities of Logan Square..."

Judy Guitelman is Executive Director of ALAS-WINGS, a 501(c)(3) non-for profit organization dedicated to empowering women facing breast cancer.  She facilitates this particular group.  Ms. Guitelman provides Hispanic/Latina women faced with breast cancer comprehensive education.

Judy, a breast cancer survivor herself, fosters a nurturing environment that allows the women to love themselves and each other.  Love is of course best experienced in the presence of food and we are most grateful to you at the Dill Pickle Food Co-op for your generous monthly donation of snacks.

The group has been meeting for over a year.  The group was born because the LSNA Health Outreach Team was seeing a growing number of Spanish-speaking women in our community being diagnosed with breast cancer.  Women have expressed many emotions, including isolation and at a loss for resources to support their needs.

A survivor shares her thoughts about her experience: "For me, this group has been very important because I learned that even when things are painful I can move forward.  This happened for me and I find comfort being surrounded by beautiful people."

The group is always open to new survivors and their loved ones.  To learn about the next meeting, call 773-384-4370.  For more information about ALAS-WINGS, contact 630-440-1335 or visit www.ALAS-WINGS.org.

In addition to hosting this support group, the LSNA Health Outreach Team links the uninsured and underinsured to public benefits (government programs) and community resoures.  It also provides a donation-based weekly community acupuncture program (ear) the first Monday of the month from 5-7 pm.
