National Parent Engagement Model Holds 2nd Annual Parent Mentor Convention

Over 500 Parent Mentors from Around the State to Attend

WHAT: Over 500 parent mentors from 13 community organizations across Illinois will gather to celebrate their accomplishments, plan for the future, and gear up for this year's funding fight in Springfield. In addition, Northeastern IL University education faculty members will provide academic workshops.

Through the Parent Mentor program, parents are trained and placed in public school classrooms to work with students four days a week, and come together one morning a week for professional development.  This Parent Mentor model has improved student test scores and built strong relationships among parents and staff while empowering parents to become strong leaders in their community. Schools with Parent Mentor programs on the LSNA model have solved the much-discussed problem of low parent engagement in low-income schools.

WHO:   Over 500 parent mentors from across Illinois, Senators Martinez and Munoz, Representatives: Hernandez, Berrios, Arroyo, Tabares, Golar, and NEIU President, Sharon Hahs will be in attendance.

WHEN:  Wednesday, January 22, 2014 – 9:30am - 1pm

WHERE:  Northeastern IL University, 5500 N St Louis Ave, Chicago, IL 60625, Alumni Hall in the Student Union Building
