Kelvyn Park High School Attendance Shoots up with Parent Help
Kelvyn Park High School won a citywide award for having the most improved attendance rate in the city, at 90% during September and October. Kelvyn Park administrators credit the effort of 5 LSNA Parent Mentors for contributing to the success.
“The Parent Mentors have made a huge impact on attendance,” said Principal Sandra Fontanez-Phelan.
In mid-September, LSNA hired 5 parents to assist in the Kelvyn Park attendance office by calling and visiting the families of truant students. “Many parents realize the severity of truancy when visited by a representative of the school,” says Attendance Coordinator William Rodriguez. After the initial contact that Parent Mentors make with parents of students, the KP attendance, counseling, and discipline offices follow up with a retention plan called “Project S.T.O.P. (Student Truancy Outreach Program).”
“The Parent Mentors can relate to the families of Kelvyn Park students,” says Assistant Principal Mr. Fernando Aviles. “It makes a difference to have parents contacting other parents.” Parent Mentors involved in the program include: Maricela Hernandez, Isabel Lopez, Gabriela Luna, Adela Navas, and Alicia Padilla.
Congratulations to Kelvyn Park High School for this remarkable achievement.
