Literacy Ambassadors Program
The purpose of the Literacy Ambassadors Program is for teachers and parents hold house meetings in students’ homes to talk about literacy and read books. In each school, 4-8 teams (1 teacher, 1 parent mentor) visit with groups of families over the year. Each team meets three times with a group of 3 families. In these “literacy house meetings” families and teachers get to know each other, discuss strategies for reading with young children, and practice reading with their children. The goal is for parents to become more involved in their children’s literacy, for families to become more involved in the school, and for families and teachers to get to know each other on a more personal basis. It builds on the base of parent mentors as a bridge between school and community. For more information, contact Leticia Barrera at LSNA.
