LSNA and Community Learning Centers Celebrate Lights On After School
The Ames Middle School Elev8 Program, Monroe Elementary School, Funston Elementary School, and Mozart Elementary School hosted events on October 16, 2008 as a part of the 7,500 rallies hosted nationwide to aim to make afterschool programs available to all. The rally in support of afterschool programs celebrated the 10th anniversary of the creation of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative, the principal funding stream for federal support for afterschool programs. Participants in the Logan Square Lights On Afterschool rally included Purple Asparagus, Voice of the City, PrimeCare Health, Hoops in the Hood, as well as local business leaders, educators, and community members. The event highlighted three of the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to the Logan Square neighborhood: keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn, and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours. To become a part of next year's celebration, please contact Maria Trejo at (773 534-4970. LSNA looks forward to celebrating many more years of afterschool programming.
