Bilingual Education
LSNA has been working with local parents around the issue of bilingual education. In early 2008, after learning that bilingual students would for the first time be tested with the same test as English speakers, LSNA began a neighborhood-wide education process to let parents know about the tests. One goal was to make sure that students and their parents did not blame themselves when the test proved difficult. Another goal was to force a public discussion on the issue. LSNA's press conference, held two weeks before state testing began, was heavily reported and sparked a citywide dialogue on the issue. Over the next two weeks LSNA parents met with Chicago Public School and state officials, Congressional representatives, and other Chicago Latino groups to press the issue. Below is some of the press coverage generated by the press conference.
