Food for the Brain

Mozart student Rafael Abreu loves broccoli, and now he’s eating it as part of his “Homework Help” class in the school’s Community Learning Center (CLC) run by LSNA. “I’m always hungry after school and its nice to have a full belly when I’m doing my homework,” he says.

LSNA realized after-school students needed a boost of energy and teamed up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) to provide a healthy hot meal to all 160 after-school Mozart students. With their food the students learn about nutrition and fitness from Mozart teacher Ms. Kolowsky — how to eat right, and why its important to drink water and exercise. GCFD also provided winter coats, so students got warm bodies, full stomachs and active brains.
