2011 Mayoral Election, Historical Opportunity

New Chicago, historical opportunity

Like any other Chicago resident Adolfo Hernandez sees the 2011 election as a unique moment. “I was born and raised in this city and almost my whole life I had a Mayor named Daley,” said LSNA’s president of the board of directors.

Hernandez believes this is the right time for community organizations to discuss city issues with a new

administration. In his opinion, Chicago enjoys a good international image but the local government still has to work to provide better options to Chicago residents. “This is a great opportunity for non-profit organizations,” indicated Hernandez.

LSNA does not support a specific candidate but leaders whose platform coincides with the goals of the community organizations in the city. Susan Yanun, director of the New Communities Program, added that “we want a Mayor that supports that vision.”

The New Chicago 2011 platform is very similar to the key elements of LSNA’s Holistic Plan, whose goals consists of improving affordable housing, health and open spaces, education, industrial retention and business development, arts, youth, safety and immigration issues.

“In the past the local government cared a lot about bringing wealthy people to the city,” said Yanun. “We need a mayor that pays attention to the real problems of people and our neighborhoods.”

“This is a great opportunity for non-profit organizations,” Adolfo Hernandez, LSNA’s president of the board of directors.
