Residents Support New Zapata Apartments
More than 100 people gathered February 21 at La Capilla del Barrio to show support for the Zapata Apartments, a community-led project to build 75 new-construction affordable rental apartments on four vacant lots on or near Armitage Avenue.
Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation and LSNA partnered with community residents to address the need for “School-to-School Housing”—affordable rental housing in walking distance of local public schools for working families. After more than three years of organizing and planning the Zapata project is “shovel ready.” Bickerdike hopes to break ground on the first building this fall.
Supporters at the meeting will be hosting house meetings with neighbors to publicize the Zapata Apartments. Residents are also urged to attend Alderman Rey Colon’s meeting to discuss necessary zoning changes. The meeting will be held Wednesday March 11, 2009 at Funston Elementary, 2010 N. Central Park Avenue, at 6:00 p.m. To get involved with the Zapata Apartments campaign call Rebecca Walz at 773-384-4370 ext. 50.
