Door by door neighbors express support for Zapata Apartments

F

or 5 weeks volunteers from LSNA member groups have been going door-to-door asking neighbors in the Armitage area between Humboldt Blvd. in the east and Central Park Ave. on the west end of Logan Square what they think about plans to build affordable rentals above storefronts on key vacant lots along Armitage Ave.

Currently, LSNA is partnering with Bickerdike Redevelopment Corp. to bring approximately 70 units of affordable rentals for working families to Logan Square. One of the key sites is on the corner of Armitage and St. Louis, where 36 affordable rentals will sit above storefronts. Volunteers have come back with positive responses to the proposed project with over 200 signatures collected in support of the Zapata Apartments.

“Everyone we've talked to has agreed that this project could really benefit the Armitage area. People are excited about this type of housing opportunity being available to their neighbors,” said Katie Sandford of New Community Covenant Church. “As we continue to talk about this project with residents, I see even more how much Logan Square will benefit from the Zapata Apartments.”

The project is far from completion, ground-breaking is not slated to begin until sometime in 2008, but residents are ready and waiting for the Zapata Apartments and the improvements they will bring to the community.
