Neighbors say "Yes" to supportive housing
L
ocal parents and volunteers have been going door-to-door asking community members to support transformation of the “Payless” building 2800 N. Milwaukee Ave. into affordable apartments and community services.
Neighbors of the building overwhelmingly have said “YES” to the community-based project.“Most people I’ve talked to want to see something positive happen in the [Payless] building because nothing has been there for a long time,” said Maria Salgado, a parent mentor at Avondale School. “Residents believe that Supportive Housing is the best option for that space because it will create permanent affordable apartments and offer important services to the community.More than anything, no one wants to see more condos or luxury housing in that building.”The project is a partnership between non-profits Humboldt Park Social Services (HPSS) and Heartland Housing. The groups are submitting a proposal to the City of Chicago to redevelop the historic Morris B. Sachs building also known as the “Payless” building. Their vision includes a creative mix of businesses, comprehensive community-based services and affordable rental apartments for low-income individuals and families. Priority would be given to residents of Logan Square, Avondale and Humboldt Park areas.Delia Ramirez, executive director of HPSS and LSNA president, has pointed out that “this is an opportunity to create a multi-use building that would have business, services and affordable housing onsite. Both staff and residents would support local businesses in the area; it’s a win, win plan for all of us.”For more information call Delia at (773) 342-1091 or Elena at LSNA.
