Tenants of the Lorington Apartments are using a new state law sponsored by Sen. Iris Martinez to maintain their buildings as affordable housing. Tenants received notice last summer that the owner of the buildingwas not planning to renew his Section 8 contract, which is a federal subsidy for affordable housing.

Logan Square Neighborhood Association staff helped residents organize and establish a tenant association (necessary under the law) and select a non-profit housing developer that could work with them to purchase the building. The tenant association chose to work with Hispanic Housing Development Corp. Hispanic Housing will soon make the current owner a purchase offer.

If you are a tenant in an affordable housing building and you receive a notice similar to the one described above, please call the Logan Square Neighborhood Association at (773) 384-4370.
