70 New Affordable Apartments to Rise Above Armitage Avenue

LSNA has partnered with Bickerdike Redevelopment Corp. to build much-needed rental housing for working families in Logan Square. The

School-to-School Armitage Ave. Housing Initiative

will build mixed-use properties, including 70 new affordable units, most located near the neighborhood schools of Funston, McAuliffe, Mozart, Ames and Stowe.

The sites are located on Armitage Ave., including a main lot at St. Louis and Armitage. Affordable commercial space will be available on the first floor of some of the buildings. The goal of this project is to provide quality affordable housing for families in addition to strengthening the commercial corridor and improving the aesthetic look of the area.

“This initiative will help people stay in the neighborhood; it gives them a goal to work for and an opportunity to help improve the community by taking a vacant lot and turning it into quality affordable housing,” says Jose Skerrett, a long time community resident and member of the LSC at Funston School.

Two parcels of vacant land have been purchased to build about 48 units and one more parcel is being sought.

Groundbreaking is expected by 2008 or early 2009.
