Universal Breakfast in the Classroom

CPS Food Service Director, Louise Esaian, invited McAuliffe to be the first school in CPS to serve Universal Breakfast in the Classroom in September, 2007.  The school administration and parents immediately agreed and the program was launched October 24, 2007, just one month later.  Prior to Universal Breakfast, an average of 200 students participated in breakfast before school.  Now that breakfast is offered to all students at no cost and is served in the classroom, 700 students are participating.  The invitation came as a result of the school’s readiness as demonstrated by their work with members of the Healthy Eating by Design Partnership, a Robert Woods Johnson Foundation initiative to lower childhood obesity.
