Two Playgrounds and Recess for all students!
For most Chicago Public Schools, restrictions on the length of the school day, lack of playground facilities, and safety issues have inhibited a district wide, mandate recess policy. In 2004, McAuliffe in partnership with the Active Living by Design Partnership, CPS Playground Pilots and LISC-New Communities Program secured its first playground designed for young children. As a result, the school administration allowed grades K-2 to have a daily 10 minute recess under the supervision of their classroom teacher. In 2007, a 6th grade student entered the winning essay that won the school a second playground suitable for the older grades. The second playground has allowed students in grades 3-6 to participate in daily recess as well.

McAuliffe continues to seek ways to improve the external environment of the school in efforts to provide a safe, attractive, exciting space for kids to be active. Current projects are underway to increase the green space surrounding the school and to create an outdoor classroom.
